Henri Cartier-Bresson - Photographer Researched

Henri Cartier - Bresson (August 22, 1908 – August 3, 2004) was a French photographer, he was the first photographer to use 35mm film his work was more about geometry such as shapes, vertical, horizontal, diagonal lines, shadows he use to take these things to his advantage, he also paid particular attention to frames as well.

The reason why I like this photographers work is because it has his own unique touch from other photographers. This photographer has his own style and works with different angles, such as vertical and parallel.

This photographer not only looks at just taking a picture, he always works things beyond that such as taking advantages of the shadows, on the other hand most intresting  thing is he works with geometry shapes, which most of his work is based on.

That's the reason why I chose to do some research on this photographer, it amazed me that how much he things  outside of the box and sees things in different perceptive of things from others.

Here are some examples of his work:

Jerry Uelsmann - Photographer Researched

Jerry Uelsmann (born June 11, 1934) is an American photographer, and was the developer of photomontage in the 20th century in America. Jerry never used digital cameras, he use to make images out of composite photographs being very talented in the darkroom, he used this skill in his composites.

The reason why I chose to look into this photographer is that, he developed photomontege photography, which is quet impressive the photo's he has I like it reason being is that, it is very deep and can connect with people and their emotions.

Here is some of Jerry's work:

This is a image of a Jerry's surrealism.

Album Cover Evaluation.

Album Cover Evaluation

White Balance : AUTO
ISO : 100 / 200
Shutter Speed: 160 / plus or minus
Aperture : F12
Location : Urban Environment
Lighting : Natural
Framing: Mid Shot

My aim was to experiment from all angles. I was no which one will be the most suitable for the shoot, either looking left or right down and up. The location I was looking for, was more of an urban location.

I found this location under a bridge in the town centre, the reason I went for this style was I was going for more of a Hip-Hop style, by looking at other Hip-Hop artwork and mainstream  artists to get inspired by.

v

The album cover which influenced my album cover idea was Lloyd Banks album cover, which I developed my idea from with the pose style and the clothes. This image helped me develop my idea, my main intention was to give it a Hip-Hop look & also I didn't want to make my own version of this song cover, I just wanted to come up with something unique.

My target audince was aimed at everyone to be honest, not specifc age group it is everyone.

The reason why I chose Hip-Hop was I had a knowledge about it more than the other genres and Hip-Hop is my favourite style of music. In my photo I portray that & it's more of a street photography, where it is showing the Hip-Hop culture with the graphite in the background, this represents proper street society we live in.

Here are some tools which I used in the process of editing the image.

These are the tools which helped me give the image a better look.

This was my final image, before and after for my album cover shoot.

              Before:
 After:

First Shoot Analysis.

As I did mention photography shoot, my first photo shoot went wrong due to the wrong settings and I wasn't so camera friendly or familiar with the camera, I totally chose the wrong settings, such as the ISO - Shutter Speed - Aperture. I wasn't really familiar with this, and got confused between these especially the ISO and the Aperture crossover. I was experimenting what I wanted, after that which one  I chose I did it wrong.

To be honest I never came across these things, at first I did not know what they are, after the teacher explaining this to me, I got confused what is what the photo got shot in the wrong format. I did not know nothing about the file differences, what compression it makes and such. So then after that after importing the picture instead of having it on RAW, which I shot in it was a different type of RAW file for sony format, then what happened was after I thought it has been imported it turned into a JPEG through iPhoto automatically, without me knowing then finally found out through get info on the Mac.

Second Shoot Analysis.

In my second shoot I learnt from my last shoot what mistakes I incorporated in the settings of the camera and set them, but this time I know what I wanted to do, did a few test shots the location was set according to my style and visual that I was going for, it was perfect. We shot the image in RAW then put it on the computer, without the image getting changed into a JPEG, then edited the image on photoshop and got my final image.

Focal Length Explained.

Different Types Of Camera Lenses

There are 3 types of camera lenses which we use which are called:

- Macro Lenses

- Standard Lenses

- Telephoto Lenses

Standard Lenses
A standard lens has a mid-range of focal length, typically around 50mm. They have an angle view which is around the same as the angle that the human eye can comfortably view, which means that they produce images, which appear as" natural" to the viewer.

Standard camera lenses normally have a fixed focal length and a wide aperture, giving them a high performance in low light. They are most known for a wide range of photography subjects, which includes landscapes, portraits.

Macro Lenses

A macro lens is designed especially for close- up photography. They have a different internal structure   from normal lenses which gives them a high quality sharpness and contrast, meaning that they can produce some really eye- catching photos.

Marco lenses are used for photographing any subject at a very close range. Typical subjects include insects, animals, plants, but they are also popular for taking extremely detailed photos of everyday objects.

Telephoto Lenses
A telephoto lens have a long focal length and provides a high level of magnification, allowing you to photograph subjects at a moderate distance. They tend to be bigger and heavier than other types of lens, although modern technological advances have made them more compact and easier to adjust.

Telephoto lenses are known for any type of photography where you can't get near to the subject, including wildlife and sports events. They are also used in portrait photography, to provide a natural feel to the perspective

Here are shots of some pictures I took, using the focal length technique. But the pictures are not consistent and not focused on one subject matter & thats were I have messed up.

The focal length of this image is 18mm .

The focal length of this image is 24mm.

The focal length on this image is 50mm.

White Balance

This image was shot in auto white balance.

When the camera's white balance is on this setting gives the image a standard and natural look to the photo.

This image was shot in tungsten white balance.

When the camera is on the setting of tungsten on white balance settings, it gives the image a blue ish affect, when this setting is used outside it will give the opposite colour effect.

This image was shot in cloudy white balance.

You can also set your white balance to cloudy which is used for overcast weathers to shoot in.

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is the amount of time that the shutter opens. Shutter speed is measured in seconds or you could also say fractions. Shutter speed os the length of time that your image sensor or focuses the scene you're attempting to capture.

Here are some examples of the photos I took.

ISO
In Digital photography ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same rule also applies to film photography, the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.
Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds. For example like indoor sports events, when you want to freeze the action in lower light. However the higher the ISO you choose the degrades the quality of the image and adds noise to the image.

Aperture
Aperture is the size of the opening of the lens when a picture is taken, it also chooses how much light goes into the lens, the bigger the lens is the more light is going to go inside it, the smaller the lens the less the light is going to go in.

Aperture is measured in F stops moving from one f-stop to the next doubles or halves the size of the amount of opening of the lens and the amount of light going to go inside it. Keep in mind that a change in shutter speed from one stop to the next doubles or halves the amount of light that gets in also, which means if you increase one and decrease the other you let the same amount of light in.

Unit 57: Photography and photographic practice. (Cover Shoot)

The reason why I have chosen these album covers is that, each and every image has it's own unique touch and by looking at these album covers I can get a clear idea of how I want my album cover to be like, as the covers are not from one genre of music, it is from a varieties of genres which is from Hip-Hop/Rap to R&B/Pop.

These covers help me, develop my own album cover a bit more and give me a better idea, and to experiment with my album cover. Having a variety is better then just one image, I can take the image similar to these, or maybe better from different angles and shots from what my subject is Hip-Hop, by looking at other genes gives you a better outlook, not that typical Hip-Hop look all the time with girls in the cover, or grafty walls etc.

These album covers do relate to my idea, but I will not be copying them as per, on the other hand it gives me a strong idea development, as I am not looking to do the typical Hip-Hop album cover, I want my image to be unique, plus stand out from the rest of others I want to develop a different Hip-Hop album cover. By looking at these images do relate to my image, even though their are Pop album covers here, but still help me develop what I want to portray as a Hip-Hop album cover.

By looking at these album covers, by a photographers point of you the images have had soft touch ups, and also the color balance is immaculately correct and looks professional. Some of these images have had graphic work on them, we can talk about the 50 cent one with the body outline and a marker effect like it has been drawn.

Brian Duffy - Photographer Researched

Brian Duffy  (15 June 1933 – 31 May 2010) was an English photographer and film producer, best known for his fashion photography & portrait photography of the times of the 60's and 70's. There was a time in Brian Duffy's career where he lost interest of photography, totally stopped doing it one point of career then he came back the year before he died back to photography.

Brain Duffy's photography work is funky, stylish it is intresting how he came back to photography, the reason I searched on him because he is out of the top 10 photographers in the world.

Also gave me a insight on his life not just as a photographer, he was an all rounder in the media field of things he is sure a photographer I would recommend on researching on.

Here are some examples of photography Brian Duffy use to do:
